I’ve been asked to speak to our local 4H chapter about beekeeping. I need some suggestions of topics, how in depth would you go. My goal is to be inspiring to hopefully get these kids interested in the hobby. It would be great if one or two of these kids would come away wanting to start a hive or two.

My thoughts so far are to start with products of the hive and try to steer the conversation more towards a Q&A session. I also want to touch on some of the aspects of beekeeping itself not the in depth technical but at least the first year requirements.

I’ve decided to keep this post very short so as not to lead the suggestions to much. I want you to give me some examples of how you would handle things. Bear in mind that speaking is not my strong suit.

Thanks in advance

Share how everyone thinks the hive is such a cooperative place, and then bust in with what happens to rival queens, old queens, unsuccessful drones, and worst of all, the successful drones, which get to have sex, but have their junk snapped off, then they die. That sort of dramatic start will get attention. Then you can go on to the fun and the yummy.
