Blue Pollen ?!?!

Finally, I had a chance to get out to Meyers Outyard on Easter Sunday. I have good and bad news to report. The hive on the right has made it through. They are doing very well bringing in load after load of pollen of all varieties from yellow to orange and even blue.

Here is that crazy looking blue pollen. There were several bees bringing it in almost every frame that I looked at had at least one bee with blue pollen. The face book consensus is that it is coming from a flower called Siberian Squill. Maybe you guys have another opinion to throw in the mix?

They already have quite a bit of capped drone brood. This colony is looking very good. I didn’t find the queen but plenty of eggs so no worries there. This is Colony number 4. I have more news from this outyard that is not so cheery but I’m going to need to gather more information on the situation. I’ll outline what happened in another post very soon.

I had heard of the blue honey that bees produced after collecting sugar from disposed M&Ms at a factory in France several years ago. Interesting you haven’t seen this in previous years if this is from a nearby plant source. Look forward to learning the mystery behind the blue pollen!
