Live edge center piece for Christmas!

First off I would like to say Merry Christmas to all of you. I hope all of you are well this holiday season.

On my wife’s side of the family we draw names for our gifting process. As luck would have it I drew my sister in law’s name. She is a very trendy woman, who pretty much has everything. She also has a very specific taste. Thankfully she has a pintrest board, so I jumped on the computer, sure enough she has a list of “things for her husband to make”. Perfect! I have a starting point.

I rifled through quite a few pictures when I came across a barn wood center piece. It was simple, just a piece of barn wood with some holes drilled into it the size of a tea light candle. The only problem was that I didn’t have any barn siding. I did have some rough sawn maple with some live edge. Here is what I came up with:

I did inlay a walnut “Dutchmen” or “bow tie key” across a small crack that was about 6″ long. It’s not really visible in the pictures because it hadn’t opened up much yet. I love the spalted figure throughout the far end of the board, there is a small amount of curl on that end also. I think it really turned out well. It looks great sitting on the 6’x6′ oak dining table that my brother in law built also. I’ll post a gallery below if you would like to see pictures of the build in progress.
